If you need to write a term paper, the only safe attitude is to believe that it does matter and that you need to devote your best energies to it. The sad fact that a lot of reports are poorly written should never become an excuse for doing likewise: instead, let it increase your determination to do an admirable job. The first thing to remember is that the chief purpose of any report is to inform. The genre covers anything from a few lines to thousands of pages. It makes no difference whether it's a brief comment from a subject teacher on a school term paper or a massive document collating the findings of a major public enquiry: a report is useful only insofar as it is illuminating.

Awkward, stuffy or opaque prose can always be avoided when writing a term paper, and if you don't avoid it, your readers will quickly come to resent their task: that is not a good basis for persuading them or getting your points across effectively. You will greatly increase your readers' appreciation-in both senses of that word-by paying close attention to these specific questions and guidelines.

For whom are you writing, and why? It is always important to have a sense of your audience when writing, but it's especially so when fashioning a report. Are you writing for experts, for intelligent non-specialists, or beginners? You need to address that question-and its answer-in every sentence you write. Experienced and knowledgeable readers will quickly tire of having elementary points spelled out; conversely, a non-expert audience will soon become lost if you go too fast or fail to explain crucial things.

The two broad aspects of term paper writing , composition and transcription, may compete for the writer's attention, demanding intricate memory and attention management. Composition, when it is taking place, wants to be relatively fast, but conventions of transcription such as spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and the onerous physical effort of making marks on paper can serve to slow down the formation of words. Thought must be transformed into words, a complex process since thought is global, diffuse, and independent of time and space, but the words have to go on paper sequentially and must stay there transfixed in time and space. Every kind of text and every aspect of text has its own conventions, so that term paper is far more than getting words out; it requires finding appropriate words for every particular task.
